In 2021, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) was added to the OFTA Film Hall of Fame for its original score. At the 2002 Oscars, it was awarded Best Cinematography (Andrew Lesnie), Best Makeup (Peter Owen and Richard Taylor), Best Music-Original Score (Howard Shore), Best Effects-Visual Effects (Jim Rygiel, Randall William Cook, Richard Taylor, Mark Stetson). The first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy won 120 awards. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's 1945 novel of the same name, Peter Jackson directed all three movies. Jackson won the rights to film the epic in 1997 after meeting with producer Saul Zaentz; however, he initially worked with Miramax Films towards a two-film production. Later, he was pressured to make the story a single film. Thankfully, Jackson made a deal with New Line, who were eager to make a trilogy. With the benefit of extended timelines with post-production, the movie was met with a huge success, sending Jackson's popularity soaring. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed entirely in New Zealand, spanning more than 150 North and South Islands locations. It sits in 10th place on IMDb's Top 250 Films list.
The film features Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, the late Sir Ian Holm, and Andy Serkis in an ensemble cast. Boyd, Bloom, and Serkis all had their major film debuts in this movie. The film is set in a fantasy land of Middle-Earth and tells the story of the Dark Lord Sauron, who seeks the One Ring, which contains part of his soul, to return to power. Unfortunately, the Ring has found its way to Frodo Baggins, a hobbit. Frodo and eight other companions, who together form the Fellowship of the Ring, journey to Mount Doom in the land of Mordor, the only place where the Ring can be destroyed. How does the Ring in The Lord of the Rings display man's manipulable morality that teeters between good and evil? Please note that I will be using some information from the other two movies in this essay.
The Ring is the center point of the movie and its sequels. It gains multiple meanings that frequently change as Frodo's journey proceeds. The Ring was created by Sauron, making it synonymous with its maker's evil intentions. Then, those who encounter the Ring are overcome with longing for power over others, which fuels the Ring's power and, in turn, fuels Sauron. Boromir is the best example of this temptation. In the woods, Boromir attacks Frodo to obtain the Ring for himself. As he mentioned in the meeting at Rivendell, he plans to use the Ring to protect Gondor from the slew of attacks from the Orcs from Mordor. Since the Ring was forged in Mordor, Boromir intends to use their weapon against them to win the war. While Boromir's intentions are pure, Man is easily corruptible, and the Ring will most likely take over Boromir's heart and make him do evil things. A similar situation happened with the second Ring Bearer, the first King of Gondor, Isildur. Isildur defeated Sauron by cutting off his fingers, causing the Ring to fall off. He had the chance to destroy the Ring by throwing it into the volcano where it was forged; however, he decided to keep it. It also corrupted Bilbo Baggins and Gollum. The Ring's power is frightening because it can affect every race of Middle-Earth, not just Man. As the trilogy proceeds, new figures come to light to counteract the Ring's temptation. Anduri's sword suggests good and unity against the Ring's evil and disunity. When Elrond presents the sword to Aragorn, he says that Arwen's fate has been linked to the Ring. As the Ring grows stronger, she grows weaker. Thus, Arwen serves as a symbol herself. The exact opposite of Sauron. The symbol of hope and good.
In conclusion, the Ring holds all evil and eventually corrupts the wearer in some shape or form. Isildur became cruel, Gollum physically diminished, and Bilbo became addicted to its power. Frodo only uses the Ring to save himself from tricky situations in the first movie. He hasn't become addicted to its power yet and seems to be the only one who can be trusted with it.
